The delight which the lover cannot help taking in the beloved is in this life a lodging, a refreshment for the pilgrim. A rightly ordered love will 'pass through' such delight, not 'remaining at rest in it' but 'referring' it to God. Not even the Lord Himself, in so far as He deigned to be for us the Way, would keep us holden, but willed that we should pass through. Like the temporal manifestations of Christ, the joy of earthly love is sacramental.
Augustine
