Of us two, tell me, who is the lover?

...the waters do not gush with the same force from her who loves and from love, from the soul and from the Word, from the Bride and from the Bridegroom, from the creature and the Creator. The difference is no less great than that which exists between a thirsty being and the fountain... But even if the creature loves less because of its limitations, as long as it loves with all its being, nothing is missing from this love.

Bernard of Clairvaux
